Amphitheatre
The amphitheatre, built according to the classical Hellenic
architectural concepts, is found next to the fishing port. It plays host
to many performances and events every year. Spectators may enjoy
unforgettable nights under the stars watching theatrical and musical
performances!
Troulli
This observation and signalling watch tower was built during the
Venetian Domination of Cyprus (1489 – 1571 A.D.). It was used for
observing possible landings by pirates or other invaders. Nowadays,
visitors can enjoy the view and feel the mystery of the old times in the
air!
Monuments
In October 2008 excavations that took place in “Avli” location (Pano
Pyrgos village) brought to light a medieval building. Ceramics found
there range chronologically from the 14th century till the late Ottoman
occupation. Among the findings, there where a bronze pectoral cross with
the Christ on it, a bronze breastpin and a bony pin. Moreover, the
discovery of many marine shells, mostly sea urchin, refers to their
nutritional habits. At present the findings are exposed in the
Antiquities Department Museum in Nicosia. After the restoration of the
“Apothikes” building as a Museum and a Cultural Centre on the seaside
road, most of the archaeological findings will be returned to Kato
Pyrgos.
Furthermore, 47 tombs of the Hellinistic and Roman period were localised
in “Mansoura” area whereas other tombs were found in “Koilada- Palialona”
area in Kato Pyrgos. It’s worth visiting them and learning about the
area’s history!
Churches
Going up to the woods, you can visit the Chapel of Virgin Mary “Galoktisti”.
According to tradition it was built using goat milk around the 12th or
14th century. Its name came from its unique construction method,
“galoktisti” means made by milk. The floor is formed by thousands of
stones and there are some magnificent murals. In case you are not
married yet, you can plan your wedding ceremony at this unique and
picturesque chapel…
Another area chapel is dedicated to Prophet Elias. It is about 600
meters away from the Chapel of Virgin Mary and next to the
archaeological findings of “Avli”. A mass takes place only on July 20,
the day that Prophet Elias is celebrated.
In the village square there is also the old temple of St. Eirini while a
new church has been built dedicated to Sts Konstantinos and Eleni.
Inside the church you can see the old icon of Virgin Mary a 13th century
precise reproduction of the icon of Virgin Mary of Kykkos Monastery in
Cyprus. People say that many miracles have happened there.
