Aquatic Destinations
Aquatic Tourism
Aquatic Tourism is a broad category of tourism
involving three different kinds of tourism activities relating to fresh
water, the beach and salt water with Nautical Tourism activities. Kato
Pyrgos offers both fresh and salt water activities as it is
characterized as a coastal, riverside and water dam destination.
Fishing Port
The recently renovated fishing port in Kato Pyrgos is appropriate for
berthing many vessels during the summer period. With its recent
renovation it has been deepened and a new jetty has been built. Fishing
is a way of life and an income source for the fishermen of Kato Pyrgos,
and visitors can approach the fishing boats, see the fishermen clean
their nets and even buy fresh fish straight from the boat! Saint
Nicolas’ open air chapel is situated at the port offering his patronage
to all sea men. The photovoltaic technology and ramps for people with
disabilities are evidence of the sustainable way of living the people of
Kato Pyrgos are trying to follow.
Rivers
Flevas, Potamoudes and Katouris are the three winter season rivers that
cross the village to finally reach the sea. The quality of their water
is excellent, they enrich the underground aquifers and provide for the
water supply of both Kato Pyrgos and Pano Pyrgos villages. Most of them
remain dry during summer time.
Flevas River
Originally called Flegias, the Flevas River runs through the Flegia area
winds through to Kato Pyrgos leading to Dasos area and flowing into the
sea.
Potamoudes River
Meaning “little river”, Potamoudes springs from Pano Pyrgos village,
more specifically from Partazis area (forest of Pafos), crosses over the
villages of Pano Pyrgos and Kato Pyrgos and flows in Holetres area.
Katouris River
Possibly, its name came from its resemblance with a torrent that floods
easily with the first rains and flows into the sea. It springs from
Hondros area (forest of Pafos) and crosses over Mesolaona area enriching
the water dam of Tylliria. Along with the Vournon brook, they flow into
the sea, in Kamilarkon area in Kato Pyrgos.
Water Dam
The Tylliria fresh water dam, naturally formed between the mountain’s
crests, is an ideal place for hiking, admiring the natural beauty and
sailing with radio controlled model sailing boats.
