The project «Promotion of the EDEN Destinations and Awareness Raising»

Following up the European Destinations of Excellence – EDEN project, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) has undertaken the implementation of the European project “Promotion of the EDEN Destinations and Awareness Raising”. The project is promoted by the Executive Agency for Small and Medium Enterprises (EASME) that has been set up by the European Commission to manage on its behalf parts of the programmes COSME and Horizon 2020.

The aim of the project is the promotion of the EDEN Destinations in Cyprus (EDEN 2007, EDEN 2008, EDEN 2009, EDEN 2010, EDEN 2011 and EDEN 2013) as well as the enhancement of the awareness of the EDEN rationale in partnerships through launching a promotional campaign. This promotional campaign is expected to increase the domestic and international tourism flows to EDEN destinations within a timeframe of 2 years from the end of the project. The key indicators to measure the impact are the number of “arrivals” and “overnight stays”.

Specific aims of the project include:

  • To increase awareness of the EDEN Award and EDEN destinations in the target markets.
  • To increase recognition of diversity, uniqueness and quality of each EDEN destination in the target markets.
  • To approve and implement agreements between travel enablers and EDEN destinations for promotional activities for 18 months. Travel enablers are envisaged to raise tourists’ awareness, attitude and purchase intentions towards the EDEN destinations.

The EDEN awarded destinations in Cyprus are the following:

  • 2007, Troodos as the «Best Emerging European Rural Destination of Excellence».
  • 2008, Agros as «European Tourist Destination of Excellence in Intangible Heritage».
  • 2009, Vouni Panagias as «Tourism and Protected Areas».
  • 2010, Kato Pyrgos as «EDEN Destination for its Aquatic Sustainable Tourism Offer».
  • 2011, Kalopanayiotis as «Tourism and Regeneration of physical sites».
  • 2013, Polis Chrysochous as «Accessible Tourism».

Thematic routes through the aforementioned six (6) Cyprus EDEN destinations will be developed that will cover all the information and the various points of interests of each Cyprus EDEN destination. The EDEN Routes will be addressed to both individual and group travellers and will be promoted through the various travel agents on the island and through the District Tourism Boards. Each Touristic Route EDEN will be developed having in mind the theme under which each destination was awarded it award and also the EDEN project aim which is to “draw attention to the value, diversity and shared characteristics of European tourist destinations where the economic growth objective is pursued in such a way as to ensure the social, cultural and environmental sustainability of tourism”.

The project “Promotion of the EDEN Destinations and Awareness Raising” is implemented under the framework of the 71/G/ENT/CIP/13/B/N03S10 – Grant Programme 2013 by the European Commission and is co-funded by EU resources and National resources.
