The Winning Destination

The Cyprus EDEN Winning Destination “Tourism and Protected Areas” will be selected by the project Steering Committee, which comprises representatives of the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of the Interior, the Union of Communities, the Union of Municipalities, the Association of Cyprus Travel Agents, the Cyprus Sustainable Tourism Initiative and the Cyprus Association of Cultural & Special Interest Tourism.

As the selection will be for a single winning destination in Cyprus, this presents a significant marketing and development opportunity. As such, the selection process focuses on the region’s commitment to the preservation of biodiversity and the ecosystems, and the upgrading of natural habitats and the wild flora and fauna.

The winning EDEN destination will be promoted extensively in Cyprus and internationally:

  • A destination brochure will be prepared in English, highlighting the destination’s biodiversity, natural landscape, local way of life, as well as pertinent information on climate, contact information, sites of interest, local arts, maps etc. The brochure will be disseminated in Cyprus, throughout Europe and world-wide.

  • The winning destination will be promoted by CTO nationally and internationally and via a comprehensive range of public relations actions (i.e. press releases, placements in media, newspaper articles). Furthermore, the Destination will be promoted in the CTO’s Website www.visitcyprus.biz as well as in the Website that has been developed especially for the Cyprus EDEN Project: www.cyprus-EDEN.com.

  • The promotion of the winning destination has a European component as it will be promoted by the European Commission Tourism Unit. To this end, funds have been planned for a pan-European promotional and advertising campaign.

  • The winning destination will also be promoted at the European Tourism Forum 2009, during the EDEN Award Ceremony of all winning EDEN “Tourism and Protected Areas”.
